Roxwel got the chance to sit down with Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan backstage at Stubb's in Austin, Texas, to talk about the hit band's long career, its promising future, as well as some of the frontman's personal thoughts and opinions.
Corgan shares with host Toby Ryan that he has been playing music for almost thirty years now since he started rocking when he was just fourteen years old. Since the group formed in Chicago in 1988, Smashing Pumpkins has become one of alternative rock's flagship bands and has created a national and international fanbase that has continued to support the band for decades.
Although they continue to host meet-and-greets at shows, Corgan claims that he wishes he had more conversation time with fans so that he could have the opportunity to learn "what they're listening to, what they're interested in and what they're responding to" so that he could use that information to make better music.
Wanting to learn more than their relationship with just their band, Corgan goes on to say, "Fans have a great perspective that you don't get in the media about how they get their music and how they relate to their artists. What turns them on and what turns them off about music."
While the majority of the Smashing Pumpkins fanbase probably keeps up with the band through the Internet and social networks, Corgan disagrees with the recent rise of Internet culture. Known for his candid opinions and bold attitude, the rocker believes that "those systems tend to reward negative voices" and "don't tend to be an accurate reflection of the world at large."
Regardless of whether or not the band rocks down the Internet highway, these guys are keeping up with the best of the best. Aware that many people are still interested in 'old' Smashing Pumpkins, Corgan claims that the greater argument now is "proving that 'new' Smashing Pumpkins has actually as bright or brighter a future than 'old' Smashing Pumpkins."
Whether it's a result of being a great musician, public figure or just someone with a big mouth, Corgan goes on to say that his biggest dream would be to "affect a positive change in the world." With his passion for music and his gift to be able to use his passion as a wonderful form of communication to people universally, the world will definitely remember more than just Corgan's beautifully bald head when they think of the legendary Smashing Pumpkins.
