It's not official, but it's definitely safe to say that Alabama Shakes was South By Southwest's biggest buzz band this year.
The band's first album isn't even out yet (it will be released April 10th), but Alabama Shakes was able to turn heads all over Austin during SXSW. Not only did they have an official SXSW showcase, perform before Fiona Apple and rock over a dozen performances throughout just a few days, the band also performed a live taping for "Austin City Limits" - a critically acclaimed and very significant PBS series. Again, these guys don't even have a full-length record out yet, yet land a spot on a show that has featured huge acts like Coldplay, R.E.M., Arcade Fire, Radiohead and more.
From Athens, Alabama, the band mixes Southern rock with an indie twist with a bluesy-soul-jam vibe - a combination of sounds that go over well with fans from various genres. At only 22 years old, frontwoman Brittany Howard rocks a sort of old-soul voice that instantly gives you chills. Even more moving? Not even a year ago, Brittany was simply working at a post office. Even though she has killer confidence on stage and the group produces a unanimously fantastic sound, you can almost sense the humbleness and slight disbelief from Brittany and the band members whose lives have changed so dramatically in just a few months. To see the band perform is an inspiring experience.
It was announced today that Jack White has added a batch of May tour dates in support of his solo debut, Blunderbuss, where Alabama Shakes will join him as an opener.
Here are a few photos from two different parties during SXSW! If you haven't seen Alabama Shakes, keep an eye out for 'em coming to your town!
Alabama Shakes performed at the Aquarium Drunkard / Hype Machine's Hype Hotel party during SXSW.

The Hallyu, aka The Korean Wave, is a term used to describe Korean culture spreading around the world. I was excited to learn about the Korean bands performing at SXSW 2012, and get the opportunity to catch the wave firsthand.
3rd Line Butterfly, Yellow Monsters, and Crying Nut performed a preview show at the Music Madness afternoon showcase. These bands are part of the Seoulsonic North American tour. I was able to catch the performances of Yellow Monsters and Crying Nut.
Yellow Monsters is a three piece punk band. They give an energetic, high energy performance. I loved how they give their heart, soul, and all their persperation into the performance.
Crying Nut is an estabilised and successful punk band in Korea. They have sold hundreds of thousands of records as an indie band. The unique feature of this band is the accordian. YES, a punk band with an accordian player. They performed an entertaining set and have a great interaction with the audience.
Another band from Korea, Galaxy Express is also performing at SXSW.
I'm looking forward to the official SXSW Seoulsonic showcase, Friday March 16 at the Soho Lounge.

RockStar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, the world's largest touring heavy metal experience, is pleased to announce the addition of Motorhead to the 2012 lineup!
This marks the first summer tour that Motorhead has taken party in for several years.
The legendary metal veterans join the already stellar 2012 main stage lineup, featuring multi-platinum Iowa cult metal groundbreakers Slipknot in the headlining position, as well as legendary thrash metal kings Slayer - both returning to the RockStar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival for a second turn at pummeling fans.
Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister commented, "Well, we're used to mayhem in this band, so it's kind of a family tradition! Bring it!"
Motorhead just finished up their run with Megadeth on the 2012 Gigantour. On January 24th, Motorhead Music/UDR released 'The Wörld Is Ours - Vol 1 - Everywhere Further Than Everyplace Else,' an official DVD containing some of the finest moments from the band's recent The Wörld Is Yours tour, which also includes a special bonus double live CD of the Chile stop. Frontman Lemmy will also be part of a Ronnie James Dio tribute album which will be out later this year. Stay tuned for more details involving Motorhead on the RockStar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival coming soon.
This year, in addition to Slipknot, Slayer and Motorhead, the main stage will also spotlight a ferocious rotation of today's best artists, including The Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying and Asking Alexandria. In 2012 the RockStar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival has upgraded the production on the festival stage and this year the Jagermeister stage will feature a special headline set by New York metal masters Anthrax supported by a rotation of the bands listed above, along with Whitechapel, High On Fire and the Jagermeister opener.
The festival will make a 27 date trek across the US beginning June 30th at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, CA.

Davy Jones, former lead singer of the 1960s made-for-television pop band The Monkees, died of a massive heart attack today at a hospital in Florida, according to an official from the local medical examiner's office.
Jones, 66, born in Manchester, England, became the principal teen idol of the rock quartet featured on the NBC comedy series "The Monkees," which was inspired in part by the Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night" and ran from the fall of 1966 to August of 1968.
Although not allowed to play their own instruments on their early records, Jones and his three cohorts - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork - had several hits that sold millions of copies, including "Last Train To Clarksville" and "I'm A Believer."
Lotus sold out Austin's La Zona Rosa on Saturday (2.25.12), capturing the crowd with their instrumental post-rock style mixed in with electronic dance beats. Per the band's bio, "No matter what the venue, the energetic joy and catharsis of a Lotus show is infectious." Well said...and that's held true for the last 8 years I've been seeing them live. Buy this show on LiveDownloads - and be sure to check out Roxwel's footage from their Austin show at Emo's a couple years back if you're looking for something visual.

Austin's friendly local music blog ATXSounds put together a stellar lineup for MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR's digital release party on Friday (2.24.12) at the Gypsy Lounge, the east side's newest music hotspot. Brooklyn's Pre War and the live music capital's Tiger Waves both opened the show. From the free keg beer and tented outdoor stage area to the talented musicians and eclectic tunes we heard up on stage, it was the perfect night with friendly faces abounding every which way. I know this Austinite will be on lookout for more from each of these bands, especially hoping to see Tiger Waves and MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR pop up frequently in the local show listings. And whether you live in Austin or not, ATXSounds does an excellent job covering the indie music scene on a national scale. Trust me, if you want to be "in the know," be sure to check 'em out.

It's no secret that we music junksters in the Roxwel office have a special place in our hearts for the tunes that come from Athens, GA. We have much love for oldies who have spawned from the small town like R.E.M., The B-52s and Widespread Panic as well as some super cool newer acts like Futurebirds, The Whigs and Dead Confederate.
A few months ago, we introduced you to another group that has plenty of evidence to prove that they should be added to the list of badass bands from Athens. The District Attorneys have a new single out and we're sure it does their anticipated album loads of justice!
After two EP releases (2010's Orders From... and 2011's Waiting On The Calm Down: The Basement Sessions), The DAs are finally getting ready to release their full-length debut album. Slowburner will be released on April 24th through This Is American Music. To get you super pumped for the release, the guys are giving you a little taste with their single "Confusion of Trust." Be sure to check it out now!
Based in Athens/Atlanta, The District Attorneys have been kicking it for about two years and have already shared the stage with Jesse Malin, Futurebirds, The Love Language, Dead Confederate frontman Hardy Morris, Hank and Cupcakes, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Diane Birch and many more. With southern rock riffs mixed in with some dreamy pedal steel and a touch of surfer vibes soaked in reverb, these guys will make you want to chillax on the porch with an ice cold Lone Star and reminisce about the good 'ole days.
Slowburner was made in Athens, GA at the Chase Park Transduction with producer/engineer Drew Vandenberg. The District Attorneys will be playing at Savannah Stopover Festival on March 9th and then will make their way to Austin to rock at SXSW.
For more info about The DAs and a look at tour dates, check out their Facebook page. You can also download The District Attorneys' past two EPs FREE.
