"Music Has Zero Boundaries" - Indicative through tonight's show
Alrite so Resurrect was in the house tonight at Emo's on 6th street to see Kinky, a band from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico (not to be confused with Texas gubernatorial candidate Richard S. "Kinky" Friedman). We landed at this show blind of what we were to expect. Those tends to be the fun ones; kinda like the no-look pass. You feel its gonna be good, but you just don't know. Then Bam! Magic bounces an amazing cross court backhand no looker. Alrite back to Kinky. They've played many different spots globally in front of many different crowds. They've played in Milan to a packed soccer stadium (tens upon tens of thousands). And know we get to enjoy them in a small setting of no more than 200 to 300 hundred.
Before we get into it. I believe DJ Marco was twistin' up some hitters to get the crowd loose and ready. Which he did; I forgot for a split second we were there to see Kinky. Big Ups to Marco...
So the intro of Kinky... Just great. You got the bassist sporting a straw cowboy hat scootin' back and forth on the stage. Lead singer, kinda has a striking resemblance to the friend (Gael García Bernal) of the rich kid in "Y Tu Mama Tambien" bouncin' all over the stage. Guitar was rockin' hard in the mix. The Drummer stood the whole time and had an impressive arsenal of drums, bells, wood stick deals, and all that good stuff to get crazy on. Bongos... Keyboard player/Accordion player was my favorite. Not only was he kicking some sick keys, he was throwing some spice with the accordion. That was an amazing infusion of crossing, say mariachi tejano with sublime with a twist of Rusted Root, layered with punk rock.
So you get the point... Every time they throw down, the crowd throws down!!!
Non Stop Floor Fillers - no lie
So if Kinky were a cake mix and you had to label the ingredients, I'd say the following ingredients in no particular order. First and for most you got some funk and soul in it... Then you get some groove. They did an impressive job of transitioning without losing the beat, without losing the crowd, and without losing the vibe. So back to the ingredients, you got some blues, crossed with smooth funky (sort of) house. You get a little trumpet and accordion, just reminds you how much you love Mexico and love mariachis. And of course you can't go see a show where the band is from Monterrey and not expect some salsa. Not too much, but just the rite amount to give that spice without overpowering the flavor. Then as you go, you're slapped with a little, say, Sublime-ish rock and roll beats. O yeah, you gotta love that. How can you not like that Sublime beat mix. The bass strums... talk about pull through and beat! Get yo head goin... Can't forget the funky guitar rock down riffs... I gotta say I was quite impressed with there jam outs. Then you get a lil turntable action scratchin' (CDJs to be exact). I could keep goin on and on but you get the point. Well maybe not... I definitely recommend a live hit of these guys. If they're swing through you neck of the woods, why not?
Okay, I'm probably forgetting some ingredients... "Probably" is not the rite word... I am definitely missing ingredients but you get the drift... These guys ROCK! They are no boundaries set here. (and that's the way music should always be) They cross it all over in a very talented way. These guys are good and fun and I definitely recommend you experience it once... Cause after that one time you'll be hooked... Live it up!
