Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store has passed the 1 billion-download mark, less than three years after it launched and just days before a planned press event where the company will unveil new consumer products.

The milestone was reached when Alex Ostrovsky from West Bloomfield, Michigan downloaded Coldplay's "Speed of Sound." He received a 20-inch iMac, 10 iPods and a $10,000 gift card good for any item or song on the iTunes Music Store. Additionally, Apple has established a scholarship fund to the Juilliard School of Music in his name.

On Feb. 28, Apple will unveil new products at an invitation-only event at its Cupertino, Calif. Campus. Speculation has already run wild about the expected new items, with the possibility of a touch-screen video iPod leading the charge.

The first video iPod was considered a half-step evolution that brought video to what is still primarily billed as a music device. The rumored new video iPod is expected to be a dedicated video device with a larger screen that features on-screen navigational controls.
