    Cold War kids

Long Beach California rock/soul quartet Cold War Kids has just released their new 4-song Behave Yourself EP today, available exclusively on iTunes before the Jan 19th physical release. Frontman Nathan Willet explains that the EP "...is a form that makes a lot of sense to us. It's a fun, more frivolous way of putting music out."

Phoenix closed out their fall tour with a killer show at Austin's La Zona Rosa on December 17.  Before the show, Roxwel got the chance to shoot an acoustic version of "Lisztomania" at their special fan meet-and-greet and interview two members of the band, as well.  Recently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix), the talented guys in the band still radiate a humble and generous air.  When asked about the upcoming Grammys, they said it would be their dream to perform at the awards ceremony with Prince, doing a mashup of their "1901" and his "1999."

Tune into the Grammy on January 31 to see if they get their wish, and in the meantime, check out some photos and videos from the Austin show!

    …That I Saw

    me & phoenix

    1.  Phoenix @ La Zona Rosa, 12.17.09 – This is most definitely “the show of the year” for me.  I just can’t stop gushing about and crushing on these talented and humble musicians that make up Phoenix, hailing from France.  I got to meet them before this show too, which was pretty cool.

    2.  The Disco Biscuits @ Crystal Bay Club, 4.4.09 – My favorite band playing my favorite venue in Tahoe (where I used to live for a couple ski seasons) that’s not only super intimate but is also a casino.  What’s not to like about that?  Oh yeah, and they encored with the song I was dying to hear that night.  Perfect.

    3.  The Black Angels @ The Mohawk, 10.30.09 – I really can’t get enough of these local Austinites, and since no one else can either – evident from their constant national and international touring – I don’t get to see them all that much, unfortunately.  But this show was a blast.  If drony, psychedelic rock peaks your interest, check ‘em out!

    4.  Ghostland Observatory @ ACL Music Festival, 10.3.09 – Having been in Austin for two solid years now, I somehow did not see Ghostland until ACL ’09.  After nearly a full day of rain, the gloom lifted right before this show.  The energy was just flat-out amazing, as was the light show.

    5.  Nico Vega @ Emo’s, 5.13.09 – Aja Volkman has the most commanding stage presence of any female I’ve ever seen perform.  Explosive live performance, soulful vocals…just can’t get enough of her.

    6.  The Disco Biscuits @ Stubb’s, 9.19.09 – My interview with the band that began in a port-a-pottie and ended right after the show is probably what made this night so special…and bizarre.  Of course, the fact that they killed it doesn’t hurt either.

    7.  K’naan @ ACL Music Festival, 10.2.09 – I was surprised by several ACL performers, but this was the surprise highlight of ACL for me.  Having been completely unfamiliar with K’naan, I had the luck to happen upon this show and found his lyrics to be powerful and his background awe-inspiring.

    8.  Lotus @ Ace’s Lounge (post ACL), 10.3.09 – This show was after my favorite day of ACL, which also happened to be the rainy one, and I definitely dried out at this show and then immediately worked up a sweat from all the dancing.  They had to shut down early (at about 3:15am versus 4), but the band did some crowd-surfing, and I scored the setlist.

    9.  SOJA @ Flamingo Cantina, 10.14.09 – Another surprise here.  I really had no idea who these kids were but was feeling up for a Wednesday night reggae show at one of the chilliest venues in Austin.  Good thing because it was irie, mon.

    10.  Eyedea & Abilities @ Habana, SXSW, 3.19.09 – Two white dudes from Minnesota aren’t what come to my mind when I think of hip-hop, at least until I saw these guys.  Think slam poetry combined with some sick nasty beats, and you get Eyedea & Abilities.

I’ve got 6 videos in my Top 10 playlist since the bands I typically like don’t really do the whole music video thing: http://www.roxwel.com/player/playlist_52215.html.

    Nadia's Top 10

    1.  Kristi Lee's Dirrty mouth - This one is one of my favorites of hers, we laugh a lot during the taping of these blogs and how can you not laugh when the main topic is about peeing on Gene Simmons' face!

    2.  Switchfoot UnCut - The Roxwel UnCut series has evolved over time on the production side of things and is one of my favorite things to shoot, this series and metal bands.  This particular shoot was at The Parish in Austin, that day I met my woman crush.  She runs the sound for The Parish and it never fails, everytime she is on board, the audio comes out wonderful!

    3.  Nico Vega Live Performance - My new favorite band is Nico Vega.  That is one intense live show.  If you get a chance, look them up and buy a ticket to see them live when they pass through your city.  One of the best live shows, Aja is a beast on stage and has a phenomenal voice.

    4.  Staind UnCut - So back to that thing about our production evolving, this was one of the first vids I did with the pic in pic style and because of that, I love it.  It was shot at the Austin Music Hall, which always has a killer light show.

    5.  Ida Maria Live Performance - Damn this woman is great live.  You know when some performers get that extra raspy/cracky voice when they sing live?  The good kind, not the bad kind.  Ida Maria killed this show at Emo's, and turned me into a fan.  I find myself loving live performance music better than cd's and this is one of those.

    6.  Coheed & Cambria ACL 09 - Fun times when bands call out their managers for not letting them do what they want.  This time around, we got the manager on cam when Claudio called him out.

    7.  Glasvegas Lolla 09 - This has got to be one of the most inaudible bands I have ever met, it's not any easier in person either.  I love this vid because I just can't understand them.  I thought about putting subtitles on this one but I seriously couldn't understand them enough to put them up.  The jacked up thing is their native language is ENGLISH!

    8.  Manchester Orchestra SXSW 09 - The first time I had ever heard of Manchester Orchestra's music was when I pressed the record button during this day party during sxsw 09.  I went home that night and bought their last two albums!

    9.  Dead Confederate SXSW 09 - This year Roxwel had a SXSW party and we were able to get Dead Confederate again (they played a killer show for our party in 08), they once again killed it this year.  The place was packed and everyone went home happy that night!  Another band that I love to hear live rather than their cd.  Great live show, great light show.  Every time.

    10.  Scott Weiland - I had to put this one in there because it is so bad!  But it's Scott Weiland! So bad.  My favorite part of this is the hip gyrations done throughout!

    Kristi's Top 10 Videos

Rise Against  “Hero of War” – Rise Against is one of those bands that come along and just kills it on every level. Plus they are from my hometown Chicago. Favorite band of 2009!

Lady Gaga “Pokerface”- Artistic, crazy, talented, and can make me dance why would you not just love her. She can even rock the piano!

Alpha Rev “Fade”- Casey Mcpherson is one of those artists who can just give you chills. All I can say is Chris Martin watch out!

Hollywood Undead “Undead”- These LA kids figured out how define an image and pulled off the rap rock sound. Bravo.

All That Remains "Forever In Your Hands"- I guess I have a thing for bands that start out metal then push the mainstream sound. I love a band that scream then hit a note. It’s just sexy..

Cascada “Evacuate The Dancefloor”- You know you danced to this track probably a million times in a club this year. Cascada’s hit reminds me of good times had this year!

Steel Panther “Death to all but Metal”- The cheese factor of this band is high, BUT these guys are actually talented! If you have never seen them LIVE you HAVE TOO!

Papa Roach Live- Jacoby is like this A.D.D. crazy man on stage, and while filming this interview was sweet as could be. What can I say I heart Jacoby J

Cage The Elephant “Aint No Rest For the Wicked”- Yes, I like Indie every once in awhile! This band blew me away at SXSW 09 and have been a fan ever since.

The Dead Weather “I Cut Like a Buffalo”- Jack White kills it again with this new project. One of the best performances at ACL 09, and lead singer Alison Mosshart is AMAZING!
