Young Love

Murphy’s Law be damned, sometimes things just fall into place the right way. Dan Keyes moved to New York City to take a break from his musical career, but ended up diving back into the music scene - albeit a different one. Formerly the frontman of celebrated Austin, Texas post-hardcore act Recover, Keyes spent five years and released three albums with the band before calling it quits in 2005 to move to New York on a whim - a longtime friend from the city had open space in his apartment, and offered to let Keyes crash there for free. With only a bag of clothes and a guitar to his name, Keyes packed up and flew to New York to start a new life in the Big Apple, on a plane ticket his mom purchased for him.

Sharing an apartment with his friend, Keys waited tables by night and worked at American Apparel by day to make ends meet, happy to enjoy the legendary New York club scene firsthand. He began messing around with music in his free time - songs and ideas that didn’t quite fit in with Recover’s sound - and gave some early recordings of his material to some DJ friends of his. Some of his work began filtering into the New York club scene, even finding its way into hip-hop mixtapes as far away as Atlanta and Houston. By the end of 2005, Dan’s runaway musical project - now called Young Love - became a full-time priority, landing a record deal with Jay-Z’s Island Records before the year’s end.

With the multitalented Keyes serving as vocalist, songwriter, and producer for the band, Young Love dropped their first release, the Young Love EP, in late 2006. Featuring the slightly downtempo number "Tragedy" as well as multiple versions of the band’s hit disco-inspired single "Discotech", the Young Love EP introduced Young Love’s catchy dance-rock sound to an even wider audience. Discotech even made its way into the popular Electronic Arts FIFA video game franchise in 2006, appearing as a background track in the popular soccer franchise.
