When influential El Paso, Texas post-hardcore outfit At the Drive-In broke up in 2001, its many talented band members parted ways. Guitarist Jim Ward (along with bassist Paul Hinojos and drummer Tony Hajjar) would go on to form alternative rock band Sparta, while frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - weary of the excessive hype and mainstream success At the Drive-In had experienced in its later days - opted to form The Mars Volta, a progressive rock group. While Sparta’s music is fairly straightforward and traditional, The Mars Volta’s sound is unconventional at best, layering cryptic, nonsensical lyrics over operatic rock ballads, with individual songs often surpassing ten minutes in length.

The Mars Volta’s idiosyncratic sound may not appeal to the mainstream, but the band has had no trouble assembling a devoted underground fan base with their top-notch instrumentation and notoriously wild live shows. After touring with The Red Hot Chili Peppers - the band is good friends with Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante - throughout 2003, The Mars Volta released their first full-length studio album De-Loused in the Comatorium in June of that year. A concept album based on the life and death of fictional artist Cerpin Taxt (loosely based on the suicide of Julio Venegas, a friend of Bixler-Zavala), the Rick Rubin (U2, Johnny Cash) produced album sold over a half-million copies with almost no promotion and bare-bones support from Universal Records - a testament to the band’s musical ability. Standout tracks from De-Loused include "Televators" and "Inertiatic ESP".

After releasing a live album in 2004, The Mars Volta returned to the studio to begin working on their second album, Frances the Mute, which saw an early 2005 release. Like De-Loused, Frances the Mute’s puzzling, cacophonous sound once again pays homage to a deceased friend of the band, in this case sound technician Jeremy Ward, who was found dead of a heroin overdose in his home at age 27. Jeremy’s death shocked the band, convincing Cedric and Omar - both heavy opiate users - to kick their drug habit. Musically, Francis expands upon the diverse and dissonant soundscapes the band pained in De-Loused, incorporating elements of jazz and latin music into the mix. Frances debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200, eventually producing two singles in the form of "The Widow" and "L’Via L’Viaquez".
