For their next release VV and Hotel hoped to strip down their sound even more, even toying with the idea of recording the entire album with a Moog synthesizer instead of a guitar. Though that idea was scrapped, The Kills’ second album
No Wow - released on Domino in mid-2004 - showcased a sound even more mellow and bluesy than
Keep on Your Mean Side, as can be seen on tracks like
"Love is a Deserter" and
"The Good Ones". Despite VV and Hotel’s anti-commercial sentiments,
No Wow fared much better commercially than their previous release, reaching #56 in the UK and peaking at #18 on the
Billboard Heatseekers chart.
Amidst heavy touring, VV and Hotel returned to the studio to produce their third album
Midnight Boom, which hit store shelves in early 2008. The duo’s most successful effort to date, Midnight Boom charted at #47 in the UK and at #133 in the USA - not bad for the fairly obscure indie pair. The Kills have so far released videos for two songs off of the album,
"U. R. A. Fever" and
"Midnight Boom".
