Indie rock band Spoon was formed in Austin, Texas by frontman/guitarist Britt Daniel and guitarist Jim Eno. The duo, both Texas natives, met in an Austin recording studio - Jim was filing in on the drums during a recording session for Britt’s first band, The Alien Beats. Though the Alien Beats soon dissolved, the duo decided to continue making music together; they named their next project Spoon as a homage to influential German art-rock band Can’s song of the same name.

The band signed to independent rock superlabel Matador in 1996, releasing their first album Telephono that same year. The album brought attention to the band; their fast and eclectic yet deep sound (drawing comparisons to The Velvet Underground and Pixies) prompted a record deal with major Warner Brothers-affiliated label Elektra Records in 1998. They released their second album A Series of Sneaks on Elektra in 2008 but it did not sell as quickly as expected, and as a result Spoon was dropped from the label.

Spoon bounced back from their Elektra fiasco in 2001, when they signed to indie label Merge Records. (…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Neutral Milk Hotel) and released their third album Girls Can Tell which turned out to be one of the hottest independent records of the year. Spoon followed up the success of Girls Can Tell with the release of Kill The Moonlight in 2002, another album that brought the band attention in the independent music scene.
