Seether

Seether is an alternative rock band from Pretoria, South Africa, known for their post-grunge sound heavily influenced by acts like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. The band was formed by frontman Shaun Morgan and bassist Dale Stewart in 1999, originally billing themselves as Saron Gas. They released one album as Saron Gas, 2000’s Fragile, but changed their name to Seether when they signed to New York-based Wind-up Records (Finger Eleven, Strata) in 2001. The name change was due to the fact that their original name sounded too much like sarin gas, the deadly nerve agent used in a 1995 terrorist attack in Tokyo‘s subway system.

The band made their major label debut in 2002 with their first release on Wind-up, Disclaimer. The album brought the band exposure outside of South Africa, due to the international acclaim generated by singles "Gasoline", "Fine Again", and "Broken". Seether spent the vast majority of 2003 on a worldwide tour as the opening act for labelmates Evanescence, leading to a romance between Morgan and Evanescence’s lead singer Amy Lee. Though the two have since drifted apart, Amy Lee played a major role in Seether’s second major release, 2004’s Disclaimer II, a reworked and expanded version of their first album.

In 2005 Seether returned to the studio to put the finishing touches on Karma and Effect, the true follow-up to Disclaimer. The band’s most successful effort to date, Karma and Effect rose to the 8th spot on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell well over a million copies worldwide. The album produced a total of four singles, among them "Remedy", "The Gift", and "Truth". Though not a true sequel, Seether released an acoustic album called One Cold Night in early 2006 that contained many tracks from both Karma and Effect and Disclaimer.
