R&B singer, actor, and songwriter Robin Thicke is a talented guy - but he sure was born into the right family. The son of actor Alan Thicke and actress/singer Gloria Loring, Robin’s natural charisma didn’t go unnoticed; his parents began using their connections in Hollywood to land Robin acting roles from an early age, including bit parts in sitcoms like The Wonder Years and Growing Pains. Though a consummate actor, Robin’s first and foremost passion was singing. Inspired by radio hits from Motown legends like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and The Isley Brothers, Thicke began developing his powerful, soulful voice from an early age.

Originally billing himself simply as Thicke (he has since begun recording and performing under his full name, Robin Thicke), Robin secured a record deal with Nu America Records, a sublabel of Interscope Records. Headed by pop culture tastemaker Andre Harrell (Babyface, Lenny Kravitz), Nu America was struggling to get off the ground at the time they signed Thicke. He began recording an album called Cherry Blue Skies in 2001, though the album was never released due to budgetary constraints at Nu America. After numerous delays it was instead re-released in 2003 as A Beautiful World, which went on to move a modest 63,000 copies based on the success of the single "When I Get You Alone".

Though Thicke’s debut album didn’t sell as well as Nu America had hoped, he managed to hang in the music industry as a songwriter, penning a number of pop-tinged hits for artists as diverse as Usher, Britney Spears, and Marc Anthony throughout 2004 and 2005. His songwriting work introduced him to Pharrell Williams - one half of production duo The Neptunes and member of indie rock band N.E.R.D. - known for his work behind the scenes with artists like Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake. With Pharrell lending his talent to production, Robin Thicke began recording his second album The Evolution of Robin Thicke in late 2004. The album saw a late 2006 release, and was far more successful than A Beautiful World, eventually earning a Platinum certification by the RIAA and moving in excess of 1.5 million copies. The Evolution of Robin Thicke featured guest appearances by songstress Faith Evans and now-ubiquitous rapper Lil’ Wayne, spawning a number of singles including "Lost Without U" and "Can U Believe".
