Rise Against

Before Rise Against began to receive any mainstream critical acclaim, they were just another band struggling to make a name for themselves in the underground punk scene. Formed in Chicago in 1999 after the collapse of two influential regional punk bands, 88 Fingers Louie and Baxter, Rise Against soon became known in independent music circles for their clean sound and progressive lyrical content, taking inspiration from early hardcore punk acts like Minor Threat and Bad Religion. After independently releasing their Transistor Revolt Demo in 2000, the band was picked up by Fat Mike of NOFX’s Fat Wreck Chords label.

Rise Against would go on to release two records on Fat Wreck Chords, 2001’s The Unraveling (essentially a remixed version of their demo material) and 2003’s Revolutions Per Minute. Throughout this time the band - spearheaded by vocalist Tim McIlrath and bassist Joe Principe - made a name for itself through extensive touring, sharing the stage with such influential punk and hardcore acts as AFI, Agnostic Front, and Hot Water Music. Revolutions Per Minute spawned two national singles, "Like the Angel" and "Heaven Knows", though they failed to chart.

The band switched labels to Universal-distributed label Geffen Records (Blink 182, Snoop Dogg) in 2004, making their major label debut later that same year with the release of their third album Siren Song of the Counter Culture. Though the album itself only charted modestly, Siren Song of the Counter Culture produced two surprisingly successful singles ("Swing Life Away" and "Give It All", which reached #12 and #33 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, respectively), paving the way for their far more successful fourth album, The Sufferer & the Witness.
