(Public Image Limited) song (which can be found on the 1979 album Metal Box), the New York City band Radio 4 formed in 1999. The original band was Anthony Roman (bass, lead vocals), Tommy Williams (guitar, vocals) and Greg Collins (drums), and they soon wrote a three-song EP for the New Jersey label Gern Blandsten.Their first album, The New Song And Dance, was produced by Tim O'Heir, came out on Gern Blandsten in 2000. Two years later, Radio 4 released their second album, this time produced by the duo known as DFA. This album was licensed by City Slang for distribution overseas. From this album came the Dance To The Underground remix 12", which set the band in a more club-oriented direction, carrying the already dance-rock sound further into dance realms. Subsequent work has included more club-friendly remixes and further distribution world-wide.
Radio 4 is a band from Brooklyn who formed in 1999. They claim that their sound, which has been described as "danceable punk," is "made in New York, is about New York, and sounds like New York".
The band was a five-piece, comprising Anthony Roman (Vocals/Bass) (formerly of Garden Variety), David Milone (Vocals/Guitar) (who replaced original guitarist/singer Tommy Williams in 2005), Gerard Garone (Keyboards), Greg Collins (Drums), and P.J. O'Connor (Percussion) until april 2008 when Gerard Garone left the band.
The band was originally a trio, comprising Anthony Roman, Tommy Williams and Greg Collins.
They cite a variety of influences, including Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, Primal Scream and Zero Zero, though their lively punk sound combined with their militant political stance inevitably draws a strong comparison with The Clash.
Their name comes from a Public Image Ltd. song from that group's second album.
