Nickelback

Once upon a time, Nickelback bassist Mike Kroeger worked the counter at a Starbucks in Vancouver, Canada. Constantly taking orders for $1.95, Mike gave lots of nickels back to his customers. The thought stuck, and when Mike, brother Chad, and two other friends started a band and began recording a demo with borrowed money, they jokingly named their band Nickelback. Though that job is now a distant memory, the name stuck, and Nickelback was born.

Virtually unknown outside of Canada, Nickelback released their first album, 1996's Curb, and began a rigorous touring schedule. In 2000 the band released their second studio album, The State, a darker and more atmospheric piece. The album received extra attention in Canada, where a new law requiring Canadian radio stations to broadcast minimum amounts of music by Canadian artists kept their hit singles Leader of Men and Worthy to Say on the air for months. Building upon this success, Nickelback’s Canadian fan base exploded, and the band began gaining popularity in the United States and abroad.

Their third album Silver Side Up was released in 2001, and has proven to be their most successful effort to date, selling over 9 million copies worldwide. Though regarded as somewhat mediocre by critics (most of the songs had been written early in the band's career, and stood in contrast to the more somber tone of their last album), the album proved vastly popular. Standout tracks include poppy fan favorite Too Bad and ubiquitous hard rock anthem How You Remind Me, which charted at #1 on the Billboard Top 100.
