Don’t call him Jamie, call him Jim - when you’re in the record store, at least. Extraordinarily talented UK crooner Jamie Lidell’s most recent album Jim hit store shelves in early 2008 and has been creating quite a stir since its arrival, earning Jamie appearances at major music festivals like Lollapalooza and the Lowlands Festival as well as tour dates alongside the likes of Elton John. Mixing Jamie’s expressive, soulful voice with laid-back instrumentation often incorporating bits of funk and electronica, Jim is well on its way to becoming Lidell’s best album yet - but it’s sure not his first.

Jamie Lidell - born in Huntingdon, a town of about 20,000 in Southeastern England - began recording as early as 1997 when he independently released an EP called Freakin’ The Frame. Though his current style leans heavily towards more mainstream R&B and blue eyed soul, his earlier work was more electronic and dance oriented. He released an album called Muddlin’ Gear on English underground label Spymania (MDK, Cassetteboy) in 2000, a clean and downtempo dance album that caught the attention of executives at Warp Records, a major UK independent label.

Warp Records has a reputation for signing some of the biggest names in dance and electronica early in their careers, with !!!, Squarepusher, and Aphex Twin numbering among their acquisitions. Jamie released his first solo album on Warp, Multiply, in 2005. Though Multiply was more soul and funk influenced than the music released by the rest of Warp’s roster, Jamie’s knack for songwriting and solid production skills made the album an underground hit nonetheless, with songs like "Game For Fools" and "A Little Bit More" carrying the day. 2008’s Jim follows in a similar vein, with funky fresh tracks like "Another Day" and "Little Bit of Feel Good" coexisting flawlessly with old school gospel-inspired joints like "All I Wanna Do".
