Gogol Bordello released their first major-label album
Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike on SideOneDummy in 2005, introducing the band’s frenzied and eclectic sound to an even larger audience. Gogol Bordello received a host of positive-yet-confused reviews by the mainstream music press with the release of
Underdog World Strike, with singles
"Start Wearing Purple" and
"Not a Crime" receiving some airplay. During this time Gogol Bordello also became a reoccurring act on the nationwide
Vans Warped Tour festival, further extending their fanbase.
The band’s visibility only increased after appearing onstage with
Madonna at the 2007
London Live Earth concert, just before Gogol Bordello released their second major-label album
Super Taranta! in 2007. The album was ranked #14 by
Rolling Stone in their
Top 50 Albums of 2007 list, with standout tracks like
"Wonderlust King" and
"Ultimate" receiving critical acclaim. Recently, Gogol Bordello has been touring extensively, playing at a number of major festivals like
Bonnaroo and
Lollapalooza throughout 2008.
