Dance/House team Freemasons was founded in London, England in 2005. The duo consists of friends Russell Small and James Wiltshire, both accomplished deejays and producers who occasionally produce music under a number of alternative monikers, including Walken, Alibi, and Freemaison. Russell Small is also affiliated with the two-man house production team Phats & Small, well known in the United Kingdom for their 1999 single "Turn Around".

Taking their name from The Freemasons Tavern - a pub in Brighton, England the duo often frequents - Freemasons made wakes in the UK dance scene in 2005, when they remixed Jackie Moore’s "This Time Baby" and Tina Turner’s "When The Heartache is Over" into international club hits, released internationally as singles on New York-based electronic mega label Ultra Music. The duo’s signature style blends elements of classic dance and disco with contemporary house sensibilities, in a manner similar to Felix da Housecat’s recent work.

Freemasons released their first album, Shakedown, on UK Dance label Loaded Records in 2007. Featuring breakout singles "Love on My Mind" (2005), "Watchin’" (2006), and "Nothing But a Heartache" (2007) and covers of songs by Beyonce, Fatboy Slim, and Luther Vandross, the album thrust Freemasons squarely into the spotlight of the UK dance scene.
