Do you ever get tired of being sexy? Me neither. Stupid question I guess, but it serves as a decent introduction for Brazilian indie rock band Cansei de Ser Sexy. Cansei de Ser Sexy - Portuguese for "got tired of being sexy", and often shortened to just CSS here in the states - formed in Sao Paulo, Brazil in late 2003, naming themselves after a particularly memorable quote by Beyonce Knowles. True to their name’s superficial nature, Cansei De Ser Sexy takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to songwriting, crafting catchy synthpop ballads brimming with pop culture references and Generation Y in-jokes. Hey, not every band has to be Rage Against the Machine, right?

Once a fixture in Sao Paulo’s underground alternative subculture, Cansei de Ser Sexy’s popularity is gaining momentum worldwide - and that’s no surprise. Like fellow Brazilian indie darlings Bonde Do Role, Cansei De Ser Sexy combines catchy tunes and a wild stage show with a heavy dose of hipster fashion overdrive; lead singer Lovefoxxx (Luisa Hanae Matsushita) is known as much for her outrageous outfits as she is for her singing ability, and the rest of the band follows suit. Cansei de Ser Sexy has what every band needs - talent, image, and a funny name.

Cansei de Ser Sexy’s career kicked into high gear in mid 2004 when the band began racking up plays on Trama Virtual (a Brazilian website similar to MySpace) and Flickr, two large social networking websites. The band independently produced two EP’s before releasing a self-titled album on Trama Virtual’s house record label; the album did well enough to warrant an international release by Warner-affiliate Sub Pop Records (Nirvana, The Postal Service) in 2006. The international version of Cansei de Ser Sexy was very well received by publications like NME and The Guardian, with singles "Alala", "Alcohol", and "Off The Hook" receiving respectable airplay as well as making appearances in a number of video games and advertisements throughout 2006 and 2007.
