Brazilian Girls

The Brazilian Girls aren’t from Brazil. Actually, only one of them - lead singer Sabina Sciubba - is even a girl; keyboardist Didi Gutman and drummer Aaron Johnston are decidedly male. Far from the shores of Rio or Sao Paulo, the band formed in New York City in 2003; despite their somewhat misleading name, quirky world-influenced electronica act Brazilian Girls is one of the most fun live dance acts in existence today, blending elements of electronic music with jazz, R&B, and latin flavor. Lack of Brazilian women aside, the band certainly has a huge amount of international cred, with frontwoman Sabina Suiubba alternating between English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian vocals - often within the space of one song.

The bad has its roots as a weekly jam session at trendy Club Nublu in Manhattan’s East Village, with Sabina (an accomplished jazz singer, having previously released two albums) providing vocals over the slick musical stylings of Gutman and Johnston. What began as a weekly gig soon turned into a full-time career when the band - now called Brazilian Girls - received a record contract from American jazz label Verve Records (Frank Zappa, Duke Ellington) in late 2004.

After some hard work in the studio, Brazilian girls released their first self-titled album in Feburary 2005. Though it sold modestly, Brazilian Girls received critical acclaim for its laid-back, international charm - Sabinna’s warm, sultry voice rides effortlessly over the transatlantic groove created by her backing band, flirting constantly and convincingly with elements of house, jazz, salsa, and pop. Standout tracks from Brazilian Girls include "Don’t Stop" and "Lazy Lover".
