Bonde Do Role

Sure, Bonde Do Role might make music, but they are not a band in the conventional sense. They make music for fun, and it is unlike any music you listen to, unless you regularly listen to art school dropouts shouting in Portuguese slang alongside a pounding disco breakbeat interwoven with heavy metal guitar riffs and the occasional runaway synthesizer. Without a doubt, Bonde Do Role's funky mix of absurd lyrics, catchy dance beats, and ironic hipster sensibility is unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Imagine the drunken Brazilian lovechild of Death From Above 1979 and LCD Soundsystem and you might be close to relating their sound to another living, breathing band.

Bonde Do Role (loosely translating to "Gang From Role", named after a local restaurant the trio frequented) formed in Rio, Brazil in 2004. Roommates Rodrigo Gorky and Pedro D'eyrot, both local DJ's, began mixing an experimental electro-rock album in their apartment. They called over their friend Marina Ribatski to sing some female parts for their album. Many days and a few bottles of vodka later, Gorky and D'eyrot sent a copy of their finished CD to Marina. The only song she liked was the last one, a joke track which was essentially incoherent shouting and metal guitars over a Brazilian Baile Funk beat. Gorky, D'eyrot, and Marina began recording similar music for fun, and Bonde Do Role was born of this joke, eventually signing to London-based indie label Domino Records.

Their only album to date, 2007's With Lasers, is twelve tracks and thirty minutes of the group's deranged Brazilian indietronica sound. Standout tracks include the short but sweet Solta O Frango (which in Portuguese means “Release the chicken”) and Office Boy, a track that mixes almost-obnoxious hair metal guitar riffs with a nonsensical chorus of “Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo BO!” Though you may not own this album, you've certainly heard it; music from With Lasers has been featured on the sitcom Ugly Betty, in Nokia advertisements worldwide, and in the Fifa 08 installment of the Fifa video game franchise.
