Atreyu

Atreyu is a metalcore band from Orange County, California. Originally formed as Retribution in 1998, the band changed its name to Atreyu (after a character from the fantasy move/novel The Neverending Story) in 2000 to prevent confusion with another California metal band of the same name. After releasing two demo albums amidst heavy touring during their early years, Atreyu signed to Chicago-based label Victory Records in 2001. A notable independent label, Victory Records has been instrumental in launching the careers of a number of metalcore and post-hardcore acts, among them Hawthorne Heights, Beneath the Buried and Me, and Silverstein.

The band made their major-label debut in 2002 with the release of their freshman album Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses. Though it failed to place higher than the 30th spot on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses’ critical acclaim thrust the band into the forefront of the metalcore scene. Their next release, 2004’s The Curse, was far more successful; to date, it has sold over 350,000 copies. The Curse featured a slightly different vocal dynamic, with lead singer Alex Varkatzas sharing the microphone with the frantic screams of drummer Brandon Saller. The album produced three singles: "Bleeding Mascara", "Right Side of the Bed", and "The Crimson".

After making an appearance on the soundtrack for the vampire thriller Underworld: Evolution in 2005 with their song "Her Portrait In Black", Atreyu returned to the studio in 2006 to release their third album, A Death-Grip on Yesterday. The album - their first to chart on the Billboard 200, at #9 - was immensely successful, producing the hit singles "Ex’s and Oh’s" and "The Theft". The album was also their last release on Victory; in 2007 Atreyu signed a record deal in with Hollywood Records (Breaking Benjamin, The Dead Milkmen) in the United States and Roadrunner Records (Killswitch Engage, Slipknot) internationally.
